Basler Morgenstraich

Basler Fasnacht

Yesterday...

Yesterday, at 4 am the "Basler Fasnacht" began. Traditionally, there is at 4 am in the NIGHT the "Morgenstraich". Honestly, my alarm ringed at 2 am and I was really thinking to not go since I was so tired. But, fortunately, we went.
After finding a parking place, we went with crowd. I was well informed by baselinsider. So first we bought "d Blaggedde" and went to Barfüsserplatz, where i had a good view. I was informed not to use the flash, so I did. Unfortunately, a lot of people used the flash, which was a little bit disturbing.

Waiting at 3.56am for the Morgenstraich. Crowd of people at Barfüsserplatz

At 4 am sharp, all lights in the inner city were turned off and we saw the first lanterns. So amazing to see the lights of the big laterns, which were on waggons. More than 12 000 participants. They played the flute and the drums. So listen to the handmade music and watching the laterns. All the participants weared costums, which of course you could not see in the dark. On the top of their mask, there were a little lamp.

First big latern

There is a big "sujet" but also each "clique" has a different, or different interpretation.

Participants
These are not only laterns, here you see the laterns on top of the mask of the participants!

Each clique went a different way. Till sunrise you could see them playing in nearly every street in the inner city. I admire this endurance!

Impressive!

After played this fantastic music and weared the heavy costums, the participants get something to drink and to eat. Tradionationally, you get "Mehlsuppe" and  "Käsewähe or Zwiebelwähe"
